New book Lock and Key

I am starting to read a new book Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen

This is a really good book about a troubled girl, who's mother left forever and left her alone living a solitary life. Her landlords found her alone living in a dump, so they took her to the Poplar House where her sister, Cora, came and fought the case of final custody over Ruby. Ruby thought she would be impenetrable, no one could get passed her thick skin, and find what was really wrong with her. She was wrong, for one day a gallant boy her age decides to take the dangerous task of getting to know her, and her past as well.

Along the way you learn about her mother and all of the problems both of them face such as: her mother drinking extensively, and doing drugs, her father leaving, her daughter leaving as well. Later in the book we learn why her mom leaves, and why they never hear from Cora. She left because her daughter is almost eighteen and she knows that when Ruby is legally an adult, she can get up and go anywhere she pleases. She didn't want that to happen to her again so she got up and left to somewhere sunny as the author wrote in the book.  

The boy that she is trying to keep her distance from but is clearly failing at is Nate. He is what she would call your typical jock he has blonde hair, USwim t-shirt on, jeans, and flip flops. When she met him she was actually trying to sneak out of Cora, and Julian, her husband's house at the time. Julian came out to find her and when he did she found her in Nate's backyard with him in the pool. Nate covered for her sure that they would be acquaintances, but carpooling, hanging out, and walking into school together wasn't the friendship he thought they would have. One night Ruby gets drunk and ditches school with one of her friends at her old school, Cole, who used to date her other friend. She woke up at five at night in a USwim sweatshirt and realizes she is in Nate's car. He tries to cover for her but fails, and gets punished, but she sees that he is a more than a jock, he is her friend.

I really like this book, I think it is really how someone as stubborn as Ruby can open herself up to someone she would least expect to call her friend.
